New Zealand Education System

In New Zealand, students are taught in an English-speaking environment. You will share classes with New Zealanders and be encouraged to participate in all aspects of learning. New Zealand operates a British-based system that’s recognised overseas, so you can move between institutions in New Zealand or other English-speaking countries while you study.

Universities

There are Eight Universities in New Zealand
New Zealand universities are research based and state owned
They offer courses from certificate level through to doctorates
The academic year is from March to November
A July start date may be available for some courses
Summer semester courses (January to March) may be available

Institutes of technology and polytechnics

New Zealand Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics are state owned
New Zealand ITPs offer courses that are equivalent in merit to those offered in New Zealand universities
ITPs offer courses from certificate level with some offering full degree and postgraduate level studies
The academic year is from March to November – a July start date may be available for some courses

Private Training Providers (PTEs)

There are many throughout New Zealand
Some PTEs run courses in a particular discipline, such as business or travel and tourism
All are all required to be registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority
Most run on a timetable similar to state tertiary institutions

Foundation studies

Many universities and some secondary schools offer foundation studies
These are generally an introduction to the New Zealand education system and courses
They are useful for students considering tertiary education

The New Zealand Education is centrally managed by a quality assurance system; New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA). NZQA establishes & ensures compliance with qualification standards & enables students to transition between education sectors, gain credit for previous study. New Zealand’s universities perform very highly on a global level. All Institutes in New Zealand are internationally represented by the NZ Government agency - Education New Zealand.

What is the difference between Universities and Polytechnics and Institutes of Technology?

The main difference is Universities focus on academic programmes and the Polytechnics focused on practical training. Over recent years both types of institutions have expanded their range of programmes. Polytechnic programmes have been expanded to include a wide range and number of degree programmes. A number of Polytechnics have also merged together and have changed their names from Polytechnics to Institutes of Technology to better reflect their focus. Cross-credits for courses completed at the Polytechnic can be credited to ongoing University study in most instances. The polytechnics get students ready for the job market.

Can I work part time while studying in New Zealand?

Do New Zealand institutions help its students with accommodation?

Yes, New Zealand has 4 different accommodation options for its students. These are Halls of Residence, Home Stays, Private Boarding and Apts.
Private accommodation outside of the University or college will be cheaper if you are prepared to share the facilities with another student and are more suitable to postgraduate or mature students. Travel to New Zealand at least 1-2 weeks before the course starts, if you are looking at this option.
Undergraduate students in their first year of the course are recommended to stay in the halls of residence on-campus. These residences are usually located in a building or large house which in turn is typically located on campus or within walking distance of the education provider.
